I am tired and worried, yet happy.
I spent today, pay day, paying bills and making copies of something I had planned to mail today, but got to the Post Office 2 minutes too late and will have to send off in the morning instead.
Should I do what I am going to do in the morning? With this week and next week and the week after being 39, 37 and 36 hr work weeks and a couple of bills and the rent due just after the next paycheck in 2 wks....normally the answer would be no....
not when I am still sleeping on the floor and will be for the foreseeable future, need a new, strong, umbrella, desperately need new shoes, and will have to somehow get litter for the cats in a couple of weeks (forget getting their nails done, shots and an upcoming Hoohawectomy for the kitten)...
but an opportunity has come up, at almost the last minute, that I just could not pass up if I aim to be serious about my creativity this year and get that focus off to a positive start...
Where to begin?
How about next Thursday?
On my cat blog, The Opinionated Pussycat, the girls have shared posts about the Amazing Acro-Cats,
a crew of very special felines who are skilled in performing a lot of very cool things:
The Amazing Acro-Cats not only perform, but also educate the public. Samantha Martin teaches the importance of, "Clicker Training" and how it can improve your cat's life, and also be useful in the event of an emergency situation.
They will be playing in Houston, January 21 - 31, at the Frenetic Theatre...that is, they will be as long as their transportation still holds up!
They are in Austin for performances and have been raising money, through a kickstarter campaign, for a new tour bus!
See Miss Elvira's report, here.
Anyway, the opportunity to see a live performance was something I didn't see as possible...until I learned that they were looking for volunteers, among the locals, to help with loading in and loading out, cat wrangling and care, merchandise making, and merchandise and ticket sales, even lighting and sound, for all their performances.
My work schedule for the next 2 weeks allows me to volunteer on the 21st and the 28th (maybe one more day depending on the next work schedule).
How much of the show will I get to see? I don't know; just the chance to get out and about and involved in my community (the Houston community AND the feline creative community) is important to me.
"BlogPaws is proud to announce the 2015 CWA Contest is open!
In November 1994, the newly formed Cat Writers’ Association held its first writing competition.
Today, the spirit of writing well and striving for excellence still lives on. That first competition had 5 regular categories and 10 sponsored special awards. Since then the awards have been broadened to most recently include dozens of regular categories and special awards.
The 2015 contest entry eligibility period was extended until December 31, 2015 this year (18 months rather than the usual 12), so that the contest period coincides with CWA’s fiscal year.
The 2015 awards will be presented at the 2016 banquet in Phoenix, AZ at the Blog Paws conference.
The new contest period of 18 months is a one-time chance to have your entry included. Entries must have been published between June 16, 2014 and December 31, 2015 to be eligible, and postmarked no later than January 18, 2016. For 2016 and beyond, the eligibility dates will correspond with the calendar, January 1 — December 31.
ANYONE (member or not) can enter the contest--but it must be "cat" focused work pub'd by Dec. 31, 2015; on a professional blog (see descriptions of what that means in rules...basically if you're blog has been around long enough, and you've been paid for any of your blog work, it qualifies).
Categories for all types of work: books to columns to pictures to blogs, including special award ($$$) entries available.
( Info page , including an informative Google Hangout video )
I read that and thought about something a long time friend and fan of my blogging had wrote me about something I had written in 2014...
"Very nice! Would love to see an illustrated book of this!"
The poem and related story, I wrote, were 2 of the best pieces of creative writing I've produced in my 13 years of blogging.
I am not ashamed to put them up against the work of anyone else out there and submit them as prime examples of my creativity and what it and the cat blog has to offer to a wider audience (If I had to submit traffic stats with my submission the fact I have little in the way of an audience and traffic would be glaring) and as something worth publishing in book form.
I've only been been paid money for my writing once (other compensation has included product) and am not sure how I can monetize my blog considering my traffic (I think traffic may be part of why Science Diet and Purina never followed up after our one time working together)
Before I committed the funds required to submit I made sure I could submit what I wanted to.
I am submitting a short story that encompasses a ballad and a 4 part story originally posted on the cat blog in August 2014 (To read them begin here) and I am submitting the ballad separately as well.
For the purpose of submission I edited the ballad post to better work as the start of the submitted version of the short story that the poem leads into.
The original tale was enhanced by a collection of photos I took to help tell the story and I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.
After all my late and current bills were paid out of today's paycheck and $$ set aside for my electric bill in 2 wks. and bus fare to and from my 2 days of volunteering I had the $30 needed to submit the entries, $5 for copies and enough $$ ($10?) to cover postage.
I have to trust that, when my next paycheck comes, I will be able to pay my monthly IRS bill, rent and renter's insurance (other bills can wait).
Yesterday and today I fretted over properly preparing my entries and am as sure as I can be I did things correctly.
The Blog Paws/ CWA Conference & Banquet, in Phoenix, is in late June, but my situation is such that I doubt I will be able to attend, though I hope to get one of my vacations for the 5 days before, during and after the event.
