Today is Election Day in the United States of America.
I am grateful to my Father, born Gorge Kundurdziev, in Macedonia, for fighting Communism in his home country, and immigrating to America to live free.
(Earliest pic of Dad in America, and only pic of him I own from old country, showing him, top left, in Bulgarian Air Force, in WW2, before he went underground to fight Tito)
Due to his loyalty to his Macedonian Heritage Mom was never able to persuade him that he would not be less a Macedonian if he became a United States Citizen, and so he became an American in all but name, assimilating as best he could into the American way of life, keeping his Green Card Status up to date, working his Ass off to make a future for his son, and then his daughters.
Though he spent the last 18 years of his life mostly in mental institutions he was proud as hell that his only son graduated not only high school, but college.
My Father fought Socialism and Communism,
And that's ok.
He sabotaged one of Tito's Railroads,
And lost an eye that day!
My Father wanted to be free,
So he could live his life his way.
He fibbed to Yugoslavia's backers,
And came to the USA!
My Father immediately got his Green Card,
So he could legally stay.
He believed in Democracy,
And earning an honest living all the live long day!
I am grateful for the freedom this country provides for a legal immigrant to have a career, and raise a family.
I am grateful to live in a free country, the greatest nation on earth, a beacon of light to the rest of the world.
Americans forget that our nation is NOT a Democracy but, as Ben Franklin said, when asked by a woman, so long ago, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
This election is the most important since the election of 1980, and before that, 1860.
Choose wisely America. Freedom is a blessing not to be taken lightly, or tossed away out of ignorance.
