In the decade since I took up blogging and rediscovered my various talents for writing, I have collected 2 boxes worth of books of inspirational how-to's and writing prompts, related to poetry, and creative writing of all types, designed to overcome writers block, and propel one forward into a life of writing....
Some were bought via Amazon, others found in used bookstores, thrift shops and library bookstores.
I think I've only read a 1/2 dozen, maybe a couple more, so far, and it has been more than 2 years since I last picked one up. I know, I know, bad boy, bad, bad boy! :-D
Over the past 9 months I found inspiration in reading a bunch of books by Julia Cameron, of Artist's Way fame. I did the Workbook, the Morning Pages, and even an Evening Journal, finding reason to share some of my thoughts on this blog along the way.
But, after some thought, I've concluded it was time to put Julia to bed, and return to doing more of what I do best...write, create, share and opine, on my blogs...
I needed return to reading my books on writing and creativity, do the writing prompts and other exercises, and even share the results on my blogs, as I grow and improve and evolve my writing life.
Since I was 10 years old I fine tuned a skill that gave me a reputation around Pomona and Claremont, well into my 30's.
As I walked a lot, sometimes 10 miles, or more, to go somewhere, I always had a book and/or magazine, or 2, in a bag, , as I walked with my nose stuck in the middle of reading one.
When I wasn't walking and reading, I was reading on the bus.
Creativity and inspiration often resulted and, after the quiet period of my 30's, picked up again when I went online, and eventually became a blogger. :-D
I once had a customer at the bookstore where I worked, in the early 90's, tell me he had driven behind me for 6 miles watching me walk the whole way, through crosswalks and all, without looking up once.
He wanted to know how I kept from being killed, and why I did it?
I pointed to my glasses, saying I had 4 eyes...2 for reading, 2 for keeping track of where I was going.
As for the why...Look, I said, I've lived in the Inland Empire all my life and things don't change that much, that often, for me to find it worth taking note of it any more than neccessary. :-D
Soo, there ya have it.
I used to blog almost every day, on one blog, or another, but the past 2 years, while not seeing a drop in my, or Nikita and Elvira's , usual standards of quality, edumication and entertainment, has seen a huge drop in the amouth of blog posts here and on Meowsings, since I became unemployed, then later broke my ankle, and worked on recovery from the injury.
As I began to focus again on my future, personally, career-wise and creatively, it's taken me a while to realize that setting pen to paper, and hitting the keyboards, needed to see a revival.
Julia and her books, along with a handful of other inspirational books read the last 2 years, served their purpose, but I realize now that all the time spent reading and writing, through those type of books, can be better spent doing what I do best and learning about and working toward, a new creative life.
