Flag Flap 2011: Part 4 - My Name is Flag, American Flag!

Considering how the new American Flag, and Pledge of Allegiance, flaps are erupting this summer, I figured it would be interesting to share old essays of mine, on previous such flaps, and see what readers, today, might have to say. ;-D ( Part 1 is here )

A comment left to the original version of my last entry in this series, by a person calling themself "Wake-Up", questioned the citizenship of the flag I had bought to stick on my bicycle.

This was my response... ;-D

May 5th, 2004 - Citizenship of Flag Questioned

Dear WAKE-UP,

My name is Flag, American Flag, and I will be 227 years old next month.

That is NOT too old that my faculties are such that I can't defend myself, and give a piece of my mind to nimrods such as yourself who have the audacity to question my citizenship.

In a comment to my new friend, and fellow Patriot's, essay of May 1st, 2004, Pedaling Patriotism, you asked the following impertinent question:

"And where was that $1.49 flag manufactured, Mr Patriot?"

As the Flag in question I feel it my duty, and obligation, to answer you in full, and set all doubts to rest about my citizenship.

I am taking time out from writing my memoirs to do this, mind you, so pay the hell attention! ( Damn it! I hadn't planned on speaking out in public so soon, but THIS is important! )

I am a 12in. X 18in. flag mounted on an approximately 2ft. long, thin, round, wooden stick.

What I'm made of isn't important other than to say it's of much sterner stuff than you, WAKE-UP.

I cost $1.39, plus 10cents tax, and am worth every penny of it!

The Company who manufactured me is a U.S. based company whose flags have been representing the symbol of this nations values, honor, and glory for 4 generations.

With the help of this company I have flown proudly, and I DO mean PROUDLY, on every battlefront, and from the mast of every ship during WW2.

I was at Pearl Harbor, and at Iwo ( perhaps you've seen the photo? ).

From Korea, to Vietnam, and the Gulf War to the present engagement, I have represented this company, and served our nation with dedication and pride.

All over America you will find me outside Govt. Buildings, and homes, on cars, and trucks, and in America's classrooms.

I take great pride in being there for our Govt., military vets, and ordinary citizens.

Since 1777 I have been our nations banner of Liberty, undivided allegiance, valor, and pride for the American way of life.

I am made of AMERICAN materials, in AMERICAN factories, and by AMERICAN workers ( 500 of my best friends ), and damn well PROUD to say so!

The ancestors of Valley Forge immigrated to America in 1882, and until the depression were burlap bag manufacturers who also dabbled in WW1 surplus, including flags.

VF ( I can call him that, if I want! Age has its priviledges! ) moved to Spring City, Pa. in 1932 and began to make Flags, and the rest is history.

Marrying another U.S. Flag maker named Betsy, in the late 90's, and after the happy couple recently gave birth to a child named Elizabeth Ross, the Family run business is as strong as ever.

They now make their home in Womelsdorf, Pa., and are a respected pillar of the community.

While there ARE some Flags sporting the colors of this great land, that are made outside the nation they defend, it is not for me to question the Patriotism of those who make them, or fly them.

It is enough for me to believe that those who fly us, and respect us, are PROUD of the country they live in, and its heritage, and are NOT ashamed to let the whole damn world, including our enemies, know it.

I hope this answers your question, and puts to rest any attempt by you to discredit a Patriot such as my friend.

May Day 2004 - Pedaling Patriotism

Today is May Day.

In the old Soviet Union this meant everybody in Moscow went to Red Square for a patriotic parade, and speeches by geriatric windbags waving the Commie Manifesto.

May Day has another meaning, and folks who travel the seas of the world know it.

A ship is in trouble.

I don't know about you, but I think the Spirit of America is in trouble this election season, as our nation is at war with forces intent on fostering terror, and tyranny.

I wrote yesterday that Old Glory had seemingly disappeared from public display by the ordinary citizens a year or so after Sept. 11 as we all resumed our normal lives.

What happened to the average American's display of Patriotism, sense of purpose, and self-assurance that we are the best hope for Freedom, Democracy, and Civilization in the world?

We are you know.

Whether we, as a Nation, and a People, ever truly wanted, or intended to be, is no longer a question up for debate.

Ever since WW 2 ( Some would say WW 1 ), and on through the Cold War, and the holding actions against the worldwide threat of Communism, and its ultimate defeat ( China, Cuba, and North Korea notwithstanding ) America has been a beacon of freedom, and a lightening rod for attack by the forces of tyranny.

They proved it on Sept. 11, 2001, and for a year we all waved our Flags, and showed our support for The War Against Terror.

Then the Flags disappeared, and civilians went back to their everyday lives, many only letting the war intrude occasionally.

What the Fuck is wrong with you people?

The war is not over, and won't be for years, not in the Middle East, not in Europe (just ask Spain), and not in America.

Do you doubt that the terrorists are plotting, scheming, and waiting patiently for the perfect opportunities to bring the fight onto our shores yet again?

That is foolish in the extreme.

Appeasement will NOT bring peace ( Just ask Great Britain about Adolf ).

We need to bring out Old Glory once again.

Wave it proudly, and unashamedly, from every nook and cranny.

Wave it from your rooftops.

Wave it from your porch.

Wave it from your beat up jalopy, and your fancy SUV.

Wave it from your Bicycle ( I used to, and am again, starting today ).

Wave it from your blog.

Let the whole Fucking World know that we are proud of who we are, and what we stand for, despite our occasional "issues".

Always have been, and always will be.

We are proud of our melting pot and, despite political differences, are united in The War Against Terror.

Don't Fuck with us, or we will kick your ass to Kingdom Come!

 

America went to war because terror never sleeps.

I think Americans need to re-awaken their patriotic spirit, and start waving the Flag again to show the world we will not be defeated by the enemies of Freedom, and Democracy.

One of my 1st bicycle rides after Sept. 11, was with Old Glory waving from the front of my bike.

I went around the corner this morning, and spent $1.49 for a Flag on a pole.

The Flag is big enough to definitely not be missed , yet not too large to obstruct my vision as it proudly waves in the breeze.

I have a basket on the front of my bike, and using 3 wire paper clips secured the little darling in place.

This evening I went for a short ride around Triangle Square Shopping Center, in my home town. :-)

The reaction the vision of me and, Old Glory, on a bike got was split down the middle.

One rowdy dissenter yelling unintelligibly, heading east, and 1 proud Patriot giving a cheer, heading west. :-)

6/29/2002 - An Opinion on the Current To-Do Occupying the Attention of the Nation:

"ALL PLEASE RISE

Mr. Bellamy, you may proceed, sir."

Mr. Bellamy, rises and stands in front of the assemblage, and putting his right hand over his heart, faces the flag, and speaks:

"Please repeat after me....

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO MY FLAG AND THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL."

"Thank you, Francis. Everyone, please be seated."

"Thank you all for coming...

Well, it seems we on the Left Coast have rallied the nation to outrage yet again! :-)

I have been amazed at how quickly folks, especially Politicians, have turned saying the Pledge of Allegiance (Link no longer Active in 2011) into an issue of professing your Christian Faith.

It's already begun to be a political football what with only Republicans getting word quickly enough, apparantly, to show up for the recite-along.

I happen to think that Americans show hypocrisy when they froth at the mouth over issues like the burning of the Flag and the Pledge.

The Pledge was, and is, a wonderful document worth saying in school and public places and events in it's original form, but to me when Congress, during the fun days of the McCarthy Era stuck 2 words in there after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, when they were not needed, and never wanted by Mr Bellamy, ignored the constitutional separation of church and state and every citizens right to worship as they please and turned the oath into a public prayer in addition to the patriotic oath it was intended to be.

To make matters worse this wasn't even the first time it had been altered against the wishes of Bellamy and his descendants:

In the 20's the National Flag Conference led by the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution turned 2 other words into a WHOLE SENTENCE, disregarding Bellamy's protests!

As Bellamy himself said: "The true reason for allegiance to the flag is the 'republic for which it stands'... And what does that vast thing, the Republic mean? It is the concise political word for the Nation - the One Nation which the Civil War was fought to prove."

Oh, and one other thing, to piss off the Republicans in the audience:

Mr. Bellamy was a Christian Socialist! :-)

This nation is a nation of many faiths. Coming to the New World to practice their faith as they pleased was one of the reasons the first European settlers paddled over here.

Most folks don't see the problem with those 2 words because one of those words refers to the God of THEIR faith, and that faith is the majority faith of our nation.

However, if the founders had wanted our country to be ONLY a Christian Nation, and one based on just ONE branch of Christianity to boot, they would have enshrined that notion into the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, and the Bill Of Rights.

 

Flag Flap 2011

In 2004, while participating in the Bike Ride before the LA Marathon, I first encountered a group of Patriotic Bicyclists, proudly waving Old Glory.

At one time even I used to wave a small flag from the handlebar of my own bike.

These days Old Glory, and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, are under attack.

On June 16th in Arlington, Virginia, vandals set fire to 27 American flags.

Doing a Google will turn up lots of interesting stories over the the last few years.

I know because I wrote some of them, as far back as 2002, on my first blog.

Back then I was still a Dimmocrat, but slowly, finally, coming to my senses by 2004.

I was Full O' Juice, and writing a lot about the issues of the day, and a handful of my essays, on the Flag Flaps of the day, caught the attention of many readers. ;-D

Some of the links in those posts don't work anymore, but that doesn't take away from the points I made, and so I think it's time to ressurect those old essays, and see what new readers think. ;-D

You may, or may not, agree with what I wrote, but I'm sure you will be be surprised, and find it all thought provoking.

It all began almost 9 years to the day, June 26th, 2002, just a few months after I began blogging........

Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional (Fox News Link no longer active in 2011)

The Senate votes, in a fit of rightious indignation, to fight the ruling in a unanimous vote [ What supporter of the ruling would commit political suicide to publicly support it, I ask you? :-) ]

The same folks take the juicy opportunity of a photo-op to stand on the capitol steps and publicly recite the Pledge to re-assure the folks back home. :-)

The Prez thinks the ruling is ridiculous, and the RIGHT ( Christians of the world Unite, and smite the infidel!!! ) is already attacking the LEFT ( See, see! A Godless ATHEIST, Commie, Tree Hugger is on the loose! Lock yer doors and hide yer wimmin and kiddies!!! ).

How many folks are gonna take the time to read the ruling, and learn about the history of the Pledge before passing judgement?

I am gonna do some reading and comment further as the days go by.

In the meantime, dear reader, ponder this:

The Pledge of Allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under Vishnu ( or Budha, Allah, etc.. ), indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

 

 Just something to think about while we all take in & absorb the ruckus now set to erupt nationwide. :-)

Mark my words: Michael Newbow will quickly be demonized as THE MOST HATED MAN IN AMERICA.

I admire him for defending his convictions, quite ably, on Hannity and Combs, among other shows today.

With many Legal Scholars apparently leaning toward the opinion that the only things that can overturn this ruling being a judgement by the SUPREMES, or a Constitutional Amendment, things are gonna get interesting.

I have been fascinated by the coverage on TV all day.

You'd think this man was SATAN himself. :-)

I feel sorry for his daughter, and other children who are raised a certain way that prevents them from saying the pledge.

Their peers, as only other children, of all ages, can be, will be unmercifully cruel in their teasing and ostricizing, especially when they absorb the reactions & beliefs of their righteously indignant parents.

I've downloaded the decision and plan to read it in the next few days.

6/27/02 -- I watched Mr. Newbow on FOX, this morning, and the calm and certain way he is defending himself, and especially correcting his interviewers, is driving his interviewers nuts. :-)

Our, um, level headed Congress people, and alot of pundits, have collectively blown a fuse, demanding these 2 judges be removed, and spending all their time rehashing every 9th Circuit ruling they can find that they disagree with and/or was overturned instead of giving detailed & factual rebuttals to the ruling.

The judges ages, and who appointed them are being cited as reasons to dump them. Next, will we hear about their pets and personal habits? :-)

I can see it now: "Judge Goodwin SCRATCHES HIS ASS & PICKS HIS NOSE! No wonder he made this ruling!!! The horror!!!" :-)

On FOX, the network of "fair and balanced reporting", since class started, around 8am pst, the scene of this childs class saying the pledge has been shown first live, then on tape 5 more times so far. :-)

It is interesting to read comments from folks I know, and some that I don't, for whom this ruling, though possibly short lived, is considered long over due.

Their memories of sitting out the Pledge, for whatever reason, and the treatment they received from teachers and others affects them to this day to one degree or another, shaping in a small way who they are, and speaks volumes.

Me, My Ankle, & I, an Encouraging Update

 

The Power of the Purr, and the prayers of friends, must be working. ;-D
 
The latest x-rays show progress from 2 weeks ago.

The above images are from Boo Boo Day - 5/22, a week after Surgery - 6/3/11, and yesterday's appointment.

They strapped a cast shoe to my foot, meaning I have a sort of sandal on the bottom of my foot/cast.

This allows me to put pressure = to half my body weight while still using the crutches, to walk on that foot.

This will be the situation for the next 2 weeks, and then the Doc will evaluate again, and see if it's OK to put more pressure on the foot, and even remove the cast.

Sooo what do I do?

I put my new reality to the test. ;-D

I have a book bag with a notepad, and a book to read, in one hand, as I head out the office door, down the hall and out onto the street, on my crutches.

I go 3 blocks to catch a bus,  then walk 2 blocks to Fresh & Easy to pick up some bread, cheese, and tomatoes, that fit in my bag, then back to the bus stop, then a half block to the next bus stop, then 2 blocks to my bank, then 1 block to a bus stop, then a block back home.

Thanks to support of all our friends, and the great care given me by Elvira & Nikita, things are moving along smoother than I expected, or had reason to hope, with my limited knowledge, and understandable fear.

Are You Losing Out by Making it too Hard for Some to Leave Comments?

Will you disable to help the disabled?

You may not know there are a number of active bloggers who live with some form of disability.  For example, Carly ~ the human owned by TIA of CUDDLES and CATNIP suffers from blindness, making blog visiting and commenting often difficult.  Our own ML ~ who is managed by KC and the SHERWOOD BUNCH has continuing back problems which often prevent her from sitting at a computer for any length of time.  And Ann, the Zoolatry Human, has hand tremors which affect her typing ability more often than not.  For each of us, and for many others, commenting can be difficult ~ especially if we must also complete "word verification", type in our email address, or type in our blog link ~ all before being allowed to comment.

Once upon a time, in the early days of Google Blogspot, word verification and such were the only controls we all had against "spam".  How, Blogspot offers automatic spam control.  We're not sure how WordPress or other blog sites work ~ but all in all, it will be a really big help to many of us if you can "disable to help the disabled".  Certainly, word verification no longer provides any protection to your blog and could easily be removed from your settings.  And perhaps there are other elements that could also be removed.  Check it out.

 

Many of us would love to comment more often, but we are either slowed down, or hindered or stopped entirely by these added controls.

So ~ please take a look at the current settings for your blog.  Are they really needed?  Please consider updating these settings, if you are comfortable doing so ~ it will help!  Thanks!

On Typepad we have the option for "Unauthenticated Commenters" who don't use their social site ID's to sign in, to...

Require readers to enter a randomly generated verification code.... or not.

On reflection, after many years of comfort with the code, Nikita, & I, are willing to check "Or Not" so as to remove this step, from Musngs, and Meowsings, for this reason:

We have the ability to read the comment before we approve it for posting.

The e-mail requirement will still be there, for now,  for those not using Social Site ID's, unless we see that removing it doesn't cause the Spambots to flock to us like Cats flock to a stash of Catnip. ;-D

With 9 years experience blogging on 4 blogs, I learned years ago, of the scourge that are the spammers, and even as technology improved in the battle, I just felt comfy with the extra steps because it cut down drastically on the number of spam comments I have to deal with on a daily basis.

In our spam Filters, of Trackbacks (TB's) caught by Typepad, on my 2 oldest blogs, and this one, there are thousands of spam that never reached the stage of my needing to see them, going back  years, it's just that Typepad has never developed a way to empty the stash:

2 Non-Active Blogs: 56,000 TB's, and 42,800 TB's.

Musings of a Mad Macedonian = 20,391 

Luckily Meowsings doesn't get many Spam TB's so it's easy to manage, and rescue good ones.

Recent developements, in the system, allow us to empty, easily, the Comment Spam Filter on this, and his, blog.

As of this morning we both get only a few spam Comments a day, if any, most caught without our knowledge by the system, so we can easily double check to make sure a good comment was not treated as spam.

Journey Toward Future, Interruptus! #3: I Attended the Rapture, Last Month, and all I Got Was...

...Left behind to laugh it up, take photos, and do some contemplation on the beach. ;-D

Of course, the next morning I broke my ankle chasing after a Cat in a drainage ditch. ;-D

Follow me back in time to the evening of May 21st as I head down to a popular Newport Beach look-out spot, above the beach, where I was hoping to spend the evening surviving the Rapture, and enjoying the sunset.

I wrote all of the following that evening sitting above the beach, and took 3 photos.... 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I arrive at Inspiration Point, at 555pm, to discover that it's a Designated Rapture Meet Up Spot, no less! ;-D

Only a handful of people, young and old, single & married, were on hand...and all were present, and accounted for at 601pm.

No-one appeared to be missing from the nearby beach, either, at least judging by the lack of excitement down there after the time had passed.

I had hoped for a clear day because the sunset, at 749pm, would have been an awesome sight as a backdrop to a photo.

It had been a few years since I was last here, & it was a time of struggle, reflection, and consideration of the future then, as well.

Everything happens for a reason they say.

Some would say that this journey I'm on right now, trying to find a new career, and even make a strong, and useful, presense in The Cat Blogosphere, is one designed by God - To lead me to the best in myself.

Am I in the midst of a life changing Spring, Summer, & Fall?

Glenn Beck would say my courage is being tested as I decided to spend the last few months learning computer skills, fixing up Meowsings, and hoping to go to the Blog Paws Convention in late August.

The easy way out of being unemployed would have been taking any old job that paid well, and not bother learning something new, and having a dream of making something special out of my creative writing talent, and blogging.

Just be a cog in the system, and forget about "poking the box".

I'm afraid, and unsure of the future, but I believe in myself, and my dream.

My guts tell me to stick with it.

I believe that my writing talents are something special, & that  Meowsings is the vehicle for my expressing it, more so than what I create here.

Beck would say that my interest in Cat Blogging is a sacred sign in, and of, itself.

I've resisted doing things to make my creative dreams come true, out of fear of the unknown, using the excuses of no time, no money, and no encouragement from my family.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But friends have encouraged me, and the last year & a 1/2 led me to realize, finally...if not now, when?

 Do what I can to learn, and do new things that can help me reach my goals, and see where it leads me.

 Commit to making something unique, & original.

 All my working life I've punched a clock at jobs that I believed were meaningful, and profitable.

 They were meaningful for a while, and profitable for 2 of the companies, also for a while.

 Dan Miller asks "Have you made the most of the life you have?"

 Am I where I thought I'd be at this stage of my life? No...Make that HELL NO!

Have I ever had a sense of "Calling"?

 Yes, in a way, ever since I re-discovered my writing talent, and took up blogging, in 2002.

 If nothing changed in my life over the next 5 years, would that be OK?

 No, not by a long shot.

I believe the things I've been doing since last November will help me make sure things change, and change for the better.

 

Journey Toward Future, Interruptus! #2 : Recovery Progressing Positively

Hello friends, and fans, of Musings of a Mad Macedonian...

Yes, I'm alive, thanks to the care of my 2 Cats, Nikita, and Elvira, the purrs & prayers, of Cat Bloggers around the world, and the wonders of modern surgery. ;-D

For those not aware of the goings on over at the blog of my Cats, I want to get you up to date on my condition. ;-D

Before my surgery on the ankle I had to hobble by bus, and on foot, with my crutches, to my personal doctor for Blood Work, & an EKG, and that was fun: Making Toothless Old Hispanic Men, Lady Bus Drivers, & Cops, Laugh...

The Cats, and I, survived Surgery Day, and night, as we also learned a bit, via Google, what I had done to my ankle.

I've had to venture out a couple of times, using a cab, since the surgery, once to a follow-up visit where xrays show the pins, and other things, put in my ankle, were co-operating, and making my bones heal properly.

Around the 17th I will return, and they will see if it's safe to begin putting pressure on the foot.

Yesterday I ventured to Target, and made like a Nascar Driver, in their electric cart, as I did a little shopping in the store. ;-D

I've bought groceries for Home Delivery, from Vons, a sister checks in on me on the weekends, and I had a Maid-4-You come by, and clean the apartment.

The Cats, and I, are hanging in there and, again, we thank everyone for the support. ;-D
