A few years ago I offered a Genealogy Writing Prompt inspired by the work a wonderful writer and, this month, the work of others in the world of Genealogy Blogging has inspired me to take their suggestions to heart, and to also put in numerical order my own past, and future Prompt Posts.
Genealogy Writing Prompt 1: Where are you from?
Georgia Ella Lyon's poem, Where I'm From, begins in this way:
I am from clothespins, from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride. I am from the dirt under the black porch. (Black, glistening it tasted like beets.)We are all from a place that is more than just a series of images on Google Maps. Every event in our lives that we can remember has shaped who we have become. Nobody is from Clothspins, but can't you see the shape and feel the texture of those in the laundry room at the author's house as a little girl?
I wrote my own version of the poem, in 2003, and on this blog shared it, a link to the above poem, and the rules for writing your own, here.
Genealogy Writing Prompt 2: What different types of old fashioned, and modern, technology do you use in your Genealogy Research?
A #2 Pencil, a favorite Ink Pen, and some notebook paper?
Or something more, um, sophisticated?
Or some combintion of the ordinary, and the technological?
Whether it’s some thing simple, or some new search engine, a special application, or anything else “2.0,” let readers of your blog know what you’re working with, and how it’s working for you.
The Technology a Genealogist uses are as varied as funds, access, knowledge, and Imagination, allow.
When I first began, in the late 1980's, my tools were pencil, pen, paper, and notebook, the Microfilm Machine at the Pomona Public Library, a copy machine, a lamination machine at a local store, and the US Postal System.
I didn't evolve much more beyond that until I got a computer in 1998, and then began blogging in 2002. ;-D
Today I am member of Ancestry, and Rootsweb, Facebook, and Twitter, blog on Typepad, and use various other online resources in my research.
My Computer is a Dell Dimension 3000, with Windows XP Home Edition.
I have a Canon Pixma MP780 Copier, Printer, Scanner, Fax.
My Camera is a Canon Power Shot A400.
I have the Arcsoft Camera Suite with PhotoImpression 5 and Video Impression 2.
My Genealogy Program, which I am still learning my way around, is Legacy 7.0.
Someday I want to get a Video Camera, and learn to use YouTube, and PodCasting.
I still use the tools of old fashioned technology, as do we all, and I use my bike, a Specialized Sirrus Sport Hybrid Road Bike, and every variety of local, and Commuter, Mass Transit, to get me from place to place, since I have never owned a car in my life. ;-D
NOTE: Thanks go to Amy Coffin, of the blog We Tree, for the idea for this Writing Prompt!
