Where's the Great Mouse Detective When You Need Him?
Riding my bike, one day in 2003, around the Upper Newport Bay, I had an unusual encounter with the creatures of the wild. (An encounter that inspired my response to a writing prompt, shared in my last entry.)
Along the side of the road, a good distance from their nearest residential neighborhood, were 3 Domestic Mallard Ducks (just 3 lonely guys out for a stroll, I assumed).
1 had his back to the road, and was just standing very still watching his pals.
The other 2 were walking around, quacking rather frequently.
Okay, nothing unusual about that, right?
A short distance down the road I come upon a dead Cotton-tailed Hare being closely observed (nibbled on?) by 3 very excited Crows who flew off a short distance as I approached.
Double OK, still nothing odd about nature taking its course, right? Bugs had it comin' to him for not lookin' both ways when crossing the road. Simple common sense.
And maybe Heckle, Jeckle, and friend had the munchies.
And so I pedal around the bend.
WHAT THE HELL?
There, by the side of the road was a large folding table, and on top of it was a large IGLOO storage container for ice and drinkies.
Not another human, aside from me, in sight.
Now, THIS was getting down right weird, and I couldn't get the series of scenes out of my head for the rest of the day.
I had questions. Wouldn't you? :-D
QUESTIONS 1: Did the ducks kill a human? Did the bunny witness it? Did Donald, Daffy, and friend, hire the crows to get rid of the witness?
QUESTIONS 2: Were the ducks and crows disguised aliens who abducted the humans and the bunny just unfortunate road kill?
QUESTIONS 3: Did the crows kill the bunny and the ducks, unseen (?) witnesses? And what about any humans?
QUESTIONS 4: Did the ducks kill the bunny, and the crows stumble upon it afterward?
QUESTIONS 5: Did the bunny die of natural causes? Then get run over by an SUV? (or get run over while making like a Chicken, and trying to cross the road?)
Are the ducks wondering if the crows did the deed?
Are the crows just innocently taking advantage of a free lunch?
Do crows even get the Munchies?
QUESTIONS 6: What "really" happened to the cute little bunny? What "really" happened to any humans connected with that table, and the container and its contents?
QUESTIONS 7: What was IN the container, anyway?
An ordinary lunch?
Huey, Dewey, and Louie?
Or, something much more sinister?
QUESTIONS 8 is the one I've been struggling with for almost 6 years, now.
Is there a story begging to be told here?
What's the story?
How do I tell it?
